What’s your water plan?
What is a water Plan?
A water plan is strategy and procedure for collecting, storing, treating, and providing clean, safe potable water for you and your dependents.
WhY do I need a water plan?
Here in the US, we are blessed with access to clean, safe water directly from the tap. We give very little thought to what we would do in the event that water was no longer safe. No matter if the cause is a cyber attack, crumbling infrastructure, or natural disasters, the system we have come to be completely dependent on is alarmingly fragile and at risk.
Where do I start?
The first step is realizing that you need a water plan. The next step is to determine your objective, which is in this case it to determine how much water you actually need to support you and your dependents for a given time period. We’ve created an easy, straightforward first physical step for you with the water plan worksheet you can access below.
a word of encouragement
We know that this whole process and topic can seem very overwhelming in the best of circumstances. We also know that the very idea of losing access to clean, safe water can be difficult to digest. We want to encourage you that the situation doesn’t have to be hopeless, nor insurmountable.
It’s better to start with small, simple steps in the right direction than to walk away feeling overwhelmed and helpless. Walk with us as we discuss ideas, concepts and action items that anyone and everyone can use to better secure their basic needs in the event of an emergency.
What do I do first?
Before we start discussing sources, methods of treatment, and equipment, the first and most crucial action item is to determine your need. A case or two of water likely won’t be enough to meet your needs and this exercise will help form the basis for your method(s) of treatment and equipment. We’ve created a water plan worksheet to help you put calculate your need based on your number of dependents.

What do I next?
Now that you’ve completed STEP 1 - Planning, let’s take a look at your current water inventory - how much step off water you have on hand. You can use this as a guide to compare what you have to what you need and help guide your next steps.
STEp 2 - INVENTORY
Do i really need that much water?
It’s true, 5 US gallons a day, per adult DOES sound like a lot. Despite being recommended by the USDA and US National Academy of Sciences that men drink 3.7L (1 US GAL) and women 2.7L (11.5 cups) a day, most of us don’t do this.
But what if we’re discussing more water for more than just drinking?
For Drinking - budget 1x gallon per adult
For Cooking - budget 2x gallons
For Cleaning - budget 1x gallons
For Bathing - budget 1x gallons
Total of 5 US GAL per adult, per day
“I don’t use that much water.”
We absolutely encourage you to ration your water and to be as efficient with it as possible. The numbers we chose to work off are not our own, but are drawn from the USDA and US National Academy of Sciences publicly available data. Time and time again we have seen people in the field or exercises use far more water than they think they will, especially when under stress and heavy exertion.
These values are presented to you to provide a basis and starting point for your planning purposes. In the end, we always encourage people to err on the side of caution when determining an essential supply. It’s never a bad thing to end up with an excess commodity of clean, safe drinking water that will enable you to help others or stretch your covered time further.
