UV treatment uses ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength to disrupt the DNA of microorganisms — bacteria, viruses, and protozoa — rendering them unable to reproduce and therefore unable to cause illness. It does not remove contaminants or particles; it neutralizes biological threats in place. Water treated with UV is safe to drink but may still contain sediment or dissolved substances if not pre-filtered.
At the correct UV dose, it is effective against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Efficacy depends on adequate exposure time and water clarity — turbid water absorbs and scatters UV light, reducing penetration and effectiveness. Pre-filtering turbid water before UV treatment is essential for reliable results.
UV water purifiers are ineffective in turbid water without pre-filtration, and they do not remove chemical contaminants, heavy metals, or improve taste and odor.
