Why quick reference cards?

The reference card is not a new idea. Any time people have wanted to retain critical, dense material that they would want to double check in a stressful environment, they have recorded or written it down. Reference cards have taken all sorts of different shapes and forms from writing on bare skin with a permanent marker to ringed notebooks. Having been in the field, frustrated with excruciatingly small instructions that are either damaged by water, difficult to read, or require mental math to convert gallons to liters, or quarts to milliliters - we personally wanted a solution to take this guess work out of the equation. So we started simple: write it down. Have the material pre-recorded, so you’re not seeking it our or taxing yourself when you’re not at your sharpest point mentally. From there we refined this material - it’s easy to put too much information on these cards, where it detracts away from what is critical in the moment. We refined this information down to a few key categories:

• Treatment - each card has at least five different methods for treating water against biological contaminants.

• Considerations - reminders for your wait times for each treatment method, including during cold weather.

• Sterilization Instructions - what happens if your container is contaminated in the field? We’ve got the necessary shock solution instructions for you to sterilize each container appropriately.

• Common Conversion table - no more guess work or limericks to remember your conversions. Single drops all the way to gallons.

• General warnings - there are sound rules to follow in safe water practices that anyone can forget and from which everyone can benefit.

Design Specifications - Specific treatment data and instructions in the pictures across the website has been omitted. All WDC products will arrive with these spaces filled with the actual data.

What if I want to make these myself?

We applaud and encourage anyone with the do-it-yourself (DIY) attitude in spirit. After all, that’s exactly why we’re here. We started doing these things for ourselves, but we understand that not everyone is wired that way or wants to dedicate the time necessary to make this a reality.

If you do want to do it yourself, please be sure to do your research, vet your sources, and test your findings. If you’re interested in a good place to start, we would suggest the CDC, EPA, or FEMA’s instructions in safe water preparation in the event of a disaster.
